Do you have a Gummy Smile? - PART II

In our last bog post we spoke about the various reasons why you may have a gummy smile and the treatment which involves a crown lengthening procedure using lasers which gives us the cosmetic result we want. In this post, we want to give you a little information about what exactly a gum re-contouring process is. To know about this in detail and whether it is a treatment option for you, call us or make an appointment to visit us at Summit Dental Clinic.

Laser recontouring allows us to completely reshape the contour of your gums and give a new gum frame for your teeth. This procedure is performed by our Periodontist / Gum Specialist using a specialised laser. The laser allows our Periodontist to avoid the use of a local anaesthetic to numb your mouth or may just use a topical anesthetic instead. The laser gently cauterises the tissues- therefore there is no bleeding and minimal (if at all) swelling afterward. Depending on the amount of gum tissue that requires removal- the procedure may require only a few minutes to less than an hour to be completed. Following this- we will give you detailed post care instructions which will include the use of a topical gel and medication (if required). However most of our patients have reported that they have not needed any type of post operative pain relief.

In certain situations when we advice gum recontouring to enhance the appearance of your teeth- we will also likely recommend combining this with other aesthetic procedures to achieve the overall cosmetic end result that you are looking for. Depending on your needs and goals (which we will discuss in detail) we may advice certain procedures. such as - Invisalign, Ceramic Veneers, Porcelain crowns and bridges or Teeth Whitening.

This post is intended to throw a little light on a simple process which can make a world of difference to your smile and in turn your self-confidence. When more of your teeth show, your smile appears better, brighter and healthier. In Summit Dental Clinic, we believe that you should have all the information needed so that you know that you do not have to live with a gummy smile even if you have already talked yourself into thinking that it does not matter !
