What is Laser Dentistry?

Lasers use light energy which is amplified into a tiny beam of power. There are a number of different lasers available for various dental procedures. Lasers are essentially pain-free and offer advantages of faster healing, less bleeding and more predictable results.

At Summit Dental Clinic, we commonly use lasers for procedures such as-

  1. Gum/ Periodontal Disease Treatment- Lasers find extensive use in gum related procedures. It can be used in the treatment of periodontal pockets as well as for deep cleaning (scaling and root planing). When used in conjunction with cleaning, lasers kills the diseased gum cells inside infected pockets without damaging healthy tissues around them. This procedure can help speed up the recovery time and treatment response.

  2. Gum Recontouring- Lasers allows us to adjust your oral soft tissues without painful invasive oral surgery. We can recontour your gums to reveal fuller and healthy tooth structure which  enhances your smile’s appearance. This procedure is indicated when you have uneven gum lines and to increase the height of the tooth in cases of crowns or veneers. In situations where the decay has spread deep inside the gums - we also recommend gum recontouring so that we can remove the decay completely and bond a restoration. All these procedures when done using lasers, can even be done without a local aneasthetic and does not require any downtime. You can get back to your routine immediately.

  3. Cold sore treatment- In situations where you feel a cold sore forming on your lip- a laser is gentle enough to treat this before it is even visible. Next time you feel the initial tingling sensation before a cold sore develops- call us and set up an appointment with our Gum Specialist.

  4. Wisdom Tooth issues- Sometimes due to the position and alignment of the wisdom tooth, the gums can grow over it causing pain, food accumulation, inflammation and infection. Using a laser we can remove the overlapping gum tissue and uncover the third molar without any bleeding and swelling that you would see with a typical incision.

  5. Root canal treatment- We also use lasers to disinfect the root canals prior to filling/ obturation to ensure a more deeper cleaning. Lasers are particularly important in case of root canal retreatment wherein the tooth is filled with a vast complex of microorganisms.

These are just some of the common procedures we perform in Summit Dental Clinic with the use of lasers. Lasers are extremely versatile which offers a myriad of advantages which makes the treatment and post operative care easy with the added very important benefit of elimination of needles/ injections.
