FLOSSING 101- PART II
In the last blogpost we spoke about the importance of flossing and how it is as important as brushing your teeth. Now let us look at the different types of floss / different ways you can clean between your teeth.
TRADITIONAL FLOSS- This is the floss string that have been around for decades and hence has proven to be one of the best aids for interdental cleaning. It takes a bit of practice , but our specialists at Summit Dental Clinic can show you the exact technique to make flossing a breeze! Be careful that you are not too rough which can cause more damage to your gums than good. Flossing is imperative when you have had dental work done- eg- crowns, restorations etc. To clean with dental caps and fillings- the technique of flossing changes - i.e- you pull the floss out at the gum line rather than an outward motion.
FLOSS PIK- These are little sickle shaped devices with an attached floss thread. It is easy to use as it only involves an up and down motion. However, the floss thread is a little thicker which makes it difficult to use in cases of tight contacts. Also your teeth are curved and the point of flossing is to clean under the curve of the tooth- which is not possible with a floss pik. We advise a floss pik if you are just starting to floss and find the traditional floss a little difficult- so get used to flossing with a pik and then switch to a floss string when you are more comfortable.
FLOSS THREADER/ THREADER FLOSS- In cases of orthodontic braces , dental bridges, fixed retainers etc- the first two options cannot be used. A floss threader works like a needle and thread where the thread is a floss string. The threader is pushed between the teeth under the orthodontic wire, bridge etc and pulled out from the other side, thus cleaning the area. It is not available over the counter in India so ask our staff at Summit Dental Clinic to order it for you if needed.
WATER FLOSSER- This is the present and the future of flossing! These are hand held devices which expels water (or air) under high pressure thus removing plaque and deposits. It can be used for cleaning in all situations- braces , crowns, implants, bridges and even between heathy teeth and gums. Many studies have proved that these flossers can clean deeper and better than traditional floss.
We hope we gave you enough information which encourages you to start flossing today! Flossing everyday can prevent a wide array of dental problems later. So start flossing no matter how difficult or cumbersome the process is initially because once you start you will notice the biggest difference in your oral health. Do not be lazy when it comes to taking care of yourself!
