The Truth about Dental X-Rays

We get many people who come into the clinic who are worried about having x-rays taken because of the radiation exposure. However, in many procedures X-rays are mandatory and without them diagnosis and treatment would be near impossible. So how many X-rays is too many?

X-rays are important because clinical and visual examination does not tell us everything we need to know. It allows us to see within and in-between teeth as well as the roots and bone under your gums. X-rays are mandatory for diagnosing cavities, plan wisdom tooth removal etc. Without X-rays your root canal treatment would be severely compromised.

The number of x-rays needed depends on your medical and dental history. Some people may require x-rays every six months to observe a previously done dental procedure and some people who are regular with their dental visit and have great oral hygiene may require it only every three years or so, if even.

Now with the regular and routine use of digital x-rays the radiation exposure is very low. A decade ago, the use of a chemical method to develop x-rays (similar to developing old photographs) was still popular. In Summit Dental Clinic, we only use digital radiographs which reduces the radiation levels up to 80-90% compared to conventional dental x-ray machinery (approximately 9 digital radiographs equals 1 film radiograph). Also we are extremely particular about patient and doctor safety and provide you with a lead apron as well as thyroid collar while taking X-rays.
